Emily Kirkpatrick, who you may know from her wildly popular Substack I ❤️ Mess, supplies the world genius fashion coverage of the worst dressed celebrities, and even more, she is proving that high brow intellectualism is crucial in a world of trash.
Emily and I essentially met on Craigslist. That is to say we both applied to a job posting to be unpaid interns at a fashion and culture print magazine, ventured into an abandoned warehouse in Greenpoint for an interview, and ultimately, got hired and quickly promoted to extremely underpaid and inexperienced editors in our fields. The magazine of course went under, but Emily and I went on to live with each other for years in prime Bushwick era (if there ever was one). She cooked me biscuits in the mornings and explained Real Housewives to me at night, and went on to thrive as a writer for gossip rags like The New York Post and The Daily Mail, pissing everyone off with her actually smart takes on celebrity fashion. Eventually she became freelance, creating her own outlet for the writing that other publications were too afraid to publish. She’s now hired as an expert on the Kardashians and pubic hair in fashion with her work featured in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, and Elle, co-hosts the smartest beauty and fashion podcast called The Review of Mess with writer Jess Difino, and I ❤️ Mess has a growing army of fans that won’t quit.
So, of course, there could be no other perfect first guest for the new Guest Check series - a monthly conversation about food and love with the people who continue to inspire. Plus it’s an excuse to see a little sneak peek at the all new visual identity created by Jenna Stamm coming soon!
Yes! A big greasy cheeseburger is my go to always!
